About Me

Hello everyone,

My name is Alex Li. I was born in Beijing, China. I moved to the UK halfway through middle school, then Canada halfway through high school. I will be in my fourth year of university after September and graduating next June. I am planning on staying in Canada and make here my home. Maybe move to a bigger city with more opportunity and less peaceful than the island. But I can imagine myself coming back once in a while for holiday relaxation.

I always enjoyed teaching and helping others. I started a course on programming in my high school while I was going there. And I had volunteered my time to teach English to Chinese residents here in Victoria. My major is computer science with software system options. I used to be heavily interested in the VR/AR environment and I ran a club for that, but I’m considering changing my focus. After I finish my degree, I hope to find work in the networking area with a splash of machine learning research. In my spare time, I like to refurbish classic cars to resell and work on my own trusty Miata. I also enjoy scuba diving, but Canada’s cold water isn’t ideal so I don’t do it too often. I have been focusing on my studies and hobbies during this pandemic. I think Victoria has a pretty loose restriction on everything so I’m not too affected.

I believe distributed learning and open learning refers to two methodologies of spreading educational resources. To me, they are very similar. In a way that they both eliminate the old classroom system and strict timetable to provide flexible hours and environment. From my google searches, online classes are classified as distributed learning. As it is a teaching method that doesn’t require face-to-face interactions. Thus students can learn whenever they want. And for open learning, I believe it’s referring to the publication of educational resources. Such as skillshare(very popular recently), Wikipedia, Duolingo, or any general public information design to give information without the formality of the education system. I’m obviously excited to learn more about them.

Regards,
Alex
